This time of year, all across the country, there are thousands of kids starting band or orchestra for the very first time! For the students, it's exciting and fun. However, I have noticed that there is one thing that is often forgotten when it comes to starting a musical instrument for the first time: Music does not offer instant gratification. Obviously, this could be different if you happen to be a child prodigy. But for 99% of the kids starting an instrument and starting their musical journey for the first time, they quickly realize that maybe it's just not as easy as they thought it wo...Kayla Furman

A Church, An Organ And A Maestro
Robert M. Sides is proud to install and service organs across our region. Recently, we had the honor of doing an organ installation at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Dickson City, PA. This organ installation is the largest, and one of the more spectacular organ installations we have ever done. Our organ specialist, Phil Maue, worked closely with the church and the Allen Organ Company to make sure that the organ the church got was exactly what they needed. The organ itself is quite spectacular. It was designed specifically for Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church....
The Sweet Smell of Summer!
Finally! Summer break is here (or almost, for some)! No more teachers! No more homework! No more tests! Just sunshine and fun with zero responsibility! Except for our young musicians! That’s right. Our young musicians don’t, or at least shouldn’t, take the summer completely off! It is incredibly important for musicians to stay in tip-top playing shape. Taking 2 or 3 months off at a time without playing at all can do so much damage, and really set a player back from where they were before they took the time off. Imagine that you lift weights. Every day you lift weights and get a good,...
The Power of Sight-Singing
Throughout my personal music journey, I have played under many conductors, been taught by several music teachers, and have even just observed other teachers and their preferred teaching techniques. Over the years, there have been a few educators who have really stuck out to me. What made them stand out from the others? Singing. I should take this time to note now that I'm speaking about instrument ensembles and classrooms, not just a choir setting. The benefits of singing in an instrumental setting can be endless, but when it comes right down to it, not many people take advantage of it. ...
Music To Work To
There have been several articles written, especially recently, that look at how listening to music while working can improve your productivity. There are tons of people who love to listen to music, not only when they're working, but doing normal, every-day tasks (Mozart piano concertos are being listened to while this is being written!). But does listening to music actually help to improve productivity? According to this article, "Music can be instrumental (pun intended) in helping you maintain focus, dig into your work, and get things done. But only if it's the right type of music." Th...
Who Needs to Practice at Home?
Whether you teach in a public or private school, or you teach private lessons, chances are at some point you have had at least one student who doesn't put in the time practicing at home. Most people fail to realize just how important practicing outside of your lessons is when playing an instrument. So what do you do when you have a student who just won't practice? Donna Schwartz, a public school teacher for over 13 years and a private music teacher for over 26 years wrote an article providing us with 7 tips to get your students to practice more. What can we do to get our students to practic...
